Copper Sword - Dragon Quest VIII by PixelPandaa Copper Sword - Dragon Quest VIII by PixelPandaa
Copper Sword from Dragon Quest: Journey of the cursed king (DQ 8) PS2 game.
One of the very first swords you can obtain.

I've tried to keep the scabbard (holster) accurate to the design from within the game, but the sword itself is slightly more adapated to my personal preferences.

This is my first project where i start doing my own displacement texturing. IT IS SOOO MUCH FUN! But very time consuming as im very fussy with how the rust should look and its a new thing for me ._ .

My ingame screenshot that i worked from to model the leather Scabbard [link]

Cinema 4D
Render time: 50mins 1s :p

Modeling time: 5-8hrs
Texturing time: way tooo long.. maybe over 15hrs.
16 objects
252,346 Polygons.

Man, that was one of my favorite sword designs in the game, mainly for that buckle that keeps the sword inside its scabbard. Very nice work.

thank you soo much
i would choose to use this weapon above all the end game gear because it just looks so darn cool

although that buckle it cool, its actually impractical lol.. think about it

*dragon appears*
wait just a minute sir, i need to unbuckle my sword
*hero dies*

True, but it would also suck if for whatever you reason the hero was hanging upside down (let's say a giant bird grabbed him by his foot and is carrying him to her nest to feed her children) and his sword slips out. You're just as screwed there, lol.

It can't be anymore impractical then trying to use a boomerang on some dragons or something.

Number 9 for the DS isn't so bad. It's not that great either because I prefer being Dragovian with that wicked-ass armor over an angel with crumby rules. But it's still playable, and the fact that every piece of armor shows up on the character is a nice touch.

Yeah, I probably would've done the same if I still had it. I loved 8 so much, I think I spent an entire 2 weeks of christmas break just trying to get everything in the game.

Got any favorite parts? For me I already said the dragovian armor and also the dragovian trials.

its a shame, i never managed to complete the trials, i only killed like 2 of them.
i aim to finish it on this run through though.

my fave part was defeating doulmagus at dark ruins, at first i was like.. ahhh YES, game is complete.. then i was like

LOL YES! another 100 hours to go!

it really surprised me how they stretched the story and gameplay.

Very nice rust texture.

Tip: The key to realistic rust on objects is placement. A rock is mostly even, while with other objects the rust and erosion tends to form on edges. See if you can sculpt it in or use a weight map.

i used a texture on a displacement channel for the material.
when i did this, i had very little knowledge on UV mapping, i still do, but now i think i know how i would place it on an edge.
what do you mean by weight map?

i never thought about erosion forming on edges. i shall keep that in mind :)

Oh wait, your not using Blender.

C4D should have similar settings for weight maps, most software does. I don't know where the feature is located in C4D though

In 3D mode, click the button that says "object mode", from there click "weight paint". This will show a view similar to a thermal mapping camera, with 0 being blue and 1 being red. You can paint on the model's vertices from here. this map can then be applied to many of blenders options, such as deformation, and having red areas emit particles while blue ares emit nothing (and other shades emit various values), etc.

In the "vertex group" option of the displacement modifier you can select the weightmap to use for displacement (red=full, blue=none, various orange-green-yellow shades are values in-between).
